This is a Letter to Your Beautiful Mind

This is a Letter to Your Beautiful Mind
a poem by Rahat Kurd, 1997

This is a Letter to Your Beautiful Mind

from the scarfhead you glanced at
uneasily as you went past in the street today
as you pretended to take aim and fire
as you scornfully called out go back to iran or
wherever
how old this is getting
i'd rather write about the sky

response #1: go with your gut, girl

i wear this for fun, actually.
it's a scarf. deal with it.

response #2: politics and the fine art of the reactionary

no, i'm not oppressed -
not a soldier of wrath - no, i'm not
patriarchy's last victim -
no, i do have rights -
i'm not a fundamentali -
hey. Hey! I'm talking to you -

response #3: the appeal to intellect through reason

I want someday
to manage the word God in a poem
without committing travesty

response #4: it's ironic

how what covers my hair
slows traffic
scares boys
stops ultraviolet rays
starts riots

keeps my ears warm in winter.

Each Breath

Each Breath
Author Unknown, Reprinted from iio.org

Am I truly grateful for each breath that I take,
For each and every moment that I am awake?

Do I thank Allah for my restful sleep,
And for the dreams that cause me to weep?

Am I honestly thankful to the Almighty One,
For the early morning mist, the bright, rising sun?

During Fajr prayer, I use my soft prayer mat,
As Allah?s servant, do I appreciate that?

Throughout the day, do I realize,
That Allah, All knowing and the Most Wise,

Gives me what I need and so much more
And that I have so much to be grateful for?

The scent of fresh rain, a small child?s laugh,
My sisters who choose to stand for Islam,

Each piece of fruit, each glass of water,
Brothers protecting their sons and their daughters.

A grandmother?s love, a book of hadith,
The clothes that I wear, the food that I eat.

The book that I should follow, the Holy Quran,
Promoting the good and ending the wrong.

So I must ask myself every beautiful day,

Am I truly grateful for each breath that I take,
For each and every moment that I am awake?

Do I thank Allah for my restful sleep,
And for the dreams that cause me to weep?

What My Destiny Holds

What My Destiny Holds
A poem about finding one's true love and spouse
by Dr Mohammed Asif Chaudry

The days to encounter what my destiny holds are approaching!
The days to be adorned by my garment are approaching!

The softness spoken by a heart
The beauty perceived by a heart
The days for my heart to encounter its mate are approaching!

From a single soul were we created
By the grace of Allah will we be united
The days for this heart to dwell in tranquility are approaching!

To strive in His way hand in hand
To encounter what may come: together
The days to build a house in jannah are approaching

Oh Allah! give me the grace this day, to say,
The day to see what my destiny holds is approaching!

No Longer Shackled

No Longer Shackled
A poem celebrating hijaab by Abdul Malik Mujahid Ali

No longer shackled by the oppression
of miniskirts and see-thru shirts,
my sisters stand proud.

Covered by cloth and more so by conviction
submission to Allah, they stand apart from the crowd.
The taunts, the jeers, the stares, the leers
Never fazing or dissuading them from following the deen.

Real women they be, the epitome of femininity
strong, secure, complete human beings.
Not slaves to the world of fashion
which is always askin'
for women to dress in as less as they can.

Their hijab is for the sake of Allah
in imaan and taqwa
they refuse to be objectified by man.

Such are my sisters in Islam.

This little poem has a wide circulation on the internet. I did some research but could not find the name of the author. In any case, it should make a lot of us stop and think about our habits. - Zawaj.com Editor

They lie on the table side by side
The Holy Quran and the T.V. Guide.

One is well worn and cherished with pride.
Not the Quran, but the T.V. Guide.

One is used daily to help folks decide.
Not the Quran, but the T.V. Guide.

As the pages are turned, what shall they see?
Oh, what does it matter, turn on the T.V.

So they open the book in which they confide.
No, not the Quran, but the T.V. Guide.

The Word of Allah is seldom read,
Maybe a verse before they fall into bed.

Exhausted and sleepy and tired as can be.
Not from reading the Quran, from watching T.V.

So then back to the table side by side,
Lie the Holy Quran and the T.V. Guide.

No time for prayer, no time for the Word,
The plan of Istiqama is seldom heard.

But forgiveness of sin, so full and free,
Is found in the Quran, not on T.V.

The Untapped Wisdom

The Untapped Wisdom
(Don't Neglect to Reflect)
By Dr. Yunus Aidaroos

Dr. Yunus is the author of Islamic articles on various subjects. Recently he was inspired to pen a few lines on reflection upon the meaning of the Qur'an.

Just a book?....nay! Inside if you only look -
and STUDY, your attention it will hook.

Reading, kissing and just shelfing it, is no way
to unearth its meaning, its message; it is your highway.

Highway for this life, and a promised shade on resurrection -
a guarantee of eternal bliss and total satisfaction !

Come, read me , STUDY me, pause to REFLECT -
lessons from my beautiful stories, do select -

to shape your life for the hereafter,
instead of loving materialism, fun and laughter.

As the clock ticks away precisely,
those who study me wisely...

will comprehend my details -
some obvious, some hidden - and the many tales,

those of Yusuf, Mosses and Sulaiman;
so do BEFRIEND the majestic Qur'an.
